Manchester Utd 1970 'Best' Shirt with No7 Born May 22, 1946 in Belfast, George Best was, in some eyes, the greatest talent the game of Football has ever seen. He was football's first superstar and his fans considered it a tragedy when he walked out on Manchester United in 1972 at the age of 27. Manchester Utd 1958 Cup Final Manchester United captured the hearts of the nation by reaching the final in the aftermath of the Munich air crash. A year earlier, Busby's Babes had tried in vain to become the first team of the century to achieve the League and FA Cup double and their return trip to Wembley saw the whole of Britain cheering United on. In the opening twenty minutes of the inaugural group game of Euro 96 against Switzerland at Wembley, Shearer scored, breaking his goal-drought. After that game ended 1–1, a victory against Scotland in the next game was crucial. After a tight and goalless first half, Gary Neville swung over a curling cross, and Shearer stooped low to head home at the far post. It set England on their way to a 2–0 win, helped by a penalty save from David Seaman and a second goal from Paul Gascoigne. England now needed to avoid defeat against Holland to be in the quarter-finals, and Shearer and his strike partner Teddy Sheringham helped them win 4–1 with two goals each, with a performance described as "Total Football" by pundits. Having qualified with the fourth best record, Bobby Robson felt that his side had a good chance of winning Euro 1988. With players such as Gary Lineker, Bryan Robson, John Barnes, Glenn Hoddle and Terry Butcher in his side, such optimism was perhaps deserved. England get off to the worst start possible, losing 1-0 to the Republic of Ireland and then went on to lose to both Holland and the USSR. England exited the tournament without winning a point. Qualifying for Italia 90, Bobby Robson’s final tournament as England manager, saw the most memorable images of Terry Butcher. During the vital match in Sweden Butcher suffered a deep cut in his head that was temporarily stitched up by the England physio. Heavily bandaged, he insisted on returning to the pitch and did not stop heading the ball, which re-opened the wound. England 1986 World Cup Tracktop England started badly in group 6 of the World Cup 1986 (held in Mexico) but managed to qualify for the second stage by beating Poland 3-0 with a hat-trick from Gary Lineker (on 8, 14 and 35 minutes). England lost 2-1 to Argentina in the quarter finals when Maradona scored one handball and one great goal. Gary Lineker did get the golden boot award however, by being top scorer (6 goals in the competition). The 1971 FA Cup Final was contested by Arsenal and Liverpool at Wembley. Arsenal won 2–1 after extra time, with all three goals coming in the added half hour.Steve Heighway scored for Liverpool first, before Arsenal equalised with a scrambled goal from substitute Eddie Kelly - the first time a substitute had ever scored in an FA Cup final. Charlie George scored a dramatic winner late in extra time. The game was the second half of Arsenal's first League and FA Cup double, the first double achieved by any club since Tottenham Hotspur's double in 1961.
